Is X Premium worth it for small accounts?
Updated
If you rely on replies to grow, the $3 Basic tier is a cheap test, since X says Premium affects reply ranking. Pay $8 if you also want the checkmark or X's creator payouts. Nobody outside X can say how much reach any tier adds, and the large multipliers you'll see quoted online don't come from anything X has published.
What Premium costs and includes
These are X's US web prices on November 3, 2026. Prices vary by country, and taxes and fees can apply.
| Tier | Monthly | Yearly | Reply prioritization |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $3 | $32 | Yes |
| Premium | $8 | $84 | Larger |
| Premium+ | $40 | $395 | Largest |
Every tier includes longer posts of up to 25,000 characters and post editing within a one-hour window. The checkmark, reduced ads and access to Original Content Rewards and Creator Subscriptions start at the Premium tier. X also says the Premium subscription is now part of a wider plan called The X Subscription, and existing subscribers keep their plan unless they switch.
What X says about reach
X documents one direct effect. Its conversations page says reply ranking considers whether the original author replied, whether the reader follows the replier, and whether the replier has a subscription. And the Premium page lists a growing level of reply prioritization by tier.
It doesn't publish how large that effect is. So "reply prioritization" is real, but its size is unknown.
What the published code shows
We searched X's published code on November 3, 2026, at commit b220448.
- No Premium multiplier in the For You scoring we read. In the
home-mixerfeed code, we only found Premium tiers in the ad code, and none in the scoring formula. - Premium does appear in account scoring. The
user-cred-v2job, which runs PageRank over the follow graph, starts part of its calculation from Premium accounts. So following by Premium accounts could matter to that score. We can't tell from the code how much it matters to reach.
The search has limits. It doesn't cover the code that ranks replies under a post, and a trained model can pick up patterns that no line of code names. So this doesn't prove Premium adds no For You reach. It only shows we didn't find a simple boost.
You may also see claims like "4x reach" or "30 to 40 percent more reply impressions." We couldn't trace them to X's code or documents. Comparisons of Premium and free accounts can also mislead, because people who pay tend to be more active already.
What actually changes for a small account
You get more room to post. X's limits page lists 50 original posts and 200 replies a day for unverified accounts. That's rarely a problem for one person writing by hand.
You can join more conversations. Some posts only allow replies from verified accounts, and you need the checkmark to answer those.
You can earn, if you qualify. X says Original Content Rewards are based on qualified impressions from Premium users, and they require the Premium tier or above plus other eligibility rules.
A paid checkmark won't fix weak replies. It can't give readers a reason to tap your name. Work on what your replies say first, and on your bio too.
Our suggestion by situation
This is our opinion, based on the evidence above.
| Your situation | What we'd do |
|---|---|
| You rarely post or reply | Skip it for now |
| You reply most days | Try Basic for a month |
| You want the checkmark or payouts | Premium |
| You mainly want more reach | Don't buy Premium+ for that alone |
How to test it
Reach data on a small account is noisy, so look at a whole month:
- Before you subscribe, record four weeks of weekly impressions, profile visits and new followers.
- Keep the same habit while subscribed. Reply at about the same rate on the same topics.
- Compare the weeks after 30 days.
- Cancel if the gap isn't worth the price to you. Your new habit may have helped more than the subscription, and this simple test can't separate the two.
