Do hashtags still work on X?
Updated
Hashtags still work as a search and topic label on X, but we found no sign that they boost a post in the For You ranking. X's own help page recommends no more than two per post, and its rules prohibit excessive or unrelated hashtags. Use one when people really follow that tag, like an event or a community challenge. Otherwise, leave it out.
What X says
X's help page on hashtags describes them as a way to categorize posts by keyword and help them show up more easily in X search. Anyone searching for the tag may find a public post that uses it. The same page recommends using no more than two hashtags per post "as best practice," though it says you may use more.
So X describes them as a discovery tool, and it doesn't claim they increase reach.
What the published code shows
We searched X's published code on November 3, 2026, at commit b220448.
- No hashtag weight in the scoring. The parameters file lists weights for actions like replies and shares, and none is for hashtags.
- "Hashtag" mostly shows up elsewhere in the feed code. In
home-mixer, we found it in muted-word handling and text formatting, not in scoring. - Clicks on hashtags are recorded. Elsewhere in the repository, hashtag clicks appear among the actions the system tracks. That's a signal about a viewer's behavior, not a reward for using tags.
There's a limit to this. A trained model reads post text, so hashtags can affect predictions in ways no single rule shows. We can't rule out an indirect effect in either direction. We can only say that we found no simple boost.
What the rules prohibit
X's authenticity policy lists these as spam:
- using trending or popular hashtags to manipulate a conversation or drive attention to your account, site or product
- posting with excessive, unrelated hashtags
- operating multiple accounts to boost trending topics or hashtags
Its automation rules also say you may not automatically post about trending topics. Restricted reach is among the penalties the policy lists, so stuffing tags can leave you worse off.
What about those statistics?
You'll see claims that posts with one or two hashtags get 21% more engagement, sometimes credited to X. We couldn't trace that to anything X has published recently, so we wouldn't rely on it. Treat any precise hashtag number as unverified unless you can check where it came from and how it was measured.
When a hashtag is worth using
These are our judgment calls.
Use one when:
- You're at an event, and people are following its tag.
- You're joining a recurring challenge, as artists often do with monthly drawing events.
- A specific community really searches or follows that tag.
- You run a campaign, and you want one tag to collect the responses.
Skip it when:
- It's a general word, like #marketing or #startup. It adds clutter, and it isn't telling anyone what's specific about your post.
- It's trending and only loosely connected to what you're saying.
- You're adding it because you feel you ought to.
Write the topic in plain words instead. People and search can still find "cold email" without a # in front. A post that reads naturally also looks less like an ad.
How to test it on your account
If you're curious, run a small test instead of trusting anyone's numbers, including ours:
- Pick one kind of post you publish often.
- For two weeks, alternate between no hashtag and one highly relevant hashtag.
- Keep the topics and timing as similar as you can.
- Compare median impressions and engagement rate.
On a small account, 10 or 20 posts won't prove much. A big difference is a hint, not proof. Most people find this matters far less than what the post says.
How to use one properly
- Put it where it reads naturally. X says hashtags can go anywhere in a post.
- Don't use spaces or punctuation, since those break the tag.
- Check what's already under the tag before you use it. It might mean something you didn't expect.
- Hashtags only help strangers find you if your account is public.
Common questions
How many hashtags should I use on X?
Zero or one is fine for most posts. X's help page recommends no more than two.
Do hashtags hurt reach on X?
We found no written penalty for one or two relevant tags. Excessive or unrelated tags can count as spam under X's policy, and that can restrict reach.
Should I put hashtags in my bio?
It isn't needed. A clear sentence about what you do is usually better. See our bio examples.
Do hashtags help new accounts?
They can help in a real community that follows a tag. For most new accounts, useful replies in active threads are a better use of time.
