Are X Communities shutting down? What to do instead
Updated
X announced in April 2026 that it would shut down Communities, with reports giving May 6 and then May 30 as the closing date. Yet when we checked on November 3, 2026, the Discover Communities page still loaded and showed communities. So we can't say exactly what's left. Either way, don't build your growth plan on Communities. Use Lists, search and replies instead.
What X announced
According to Dataconomy's report, Nikita Bier, then X's head of product, confirmed the change on April 22, 2026.
- Reasons given: Bier said Communities were used by under 0.4% of users, while accounting for 80% of reports of spam, financial scams and malware. In some weeks, the feature took up to half the team's time.
- Dates: The closing date was first reported as May 6, and Dataconomy says it was later extended to May 30.
- Replacements mentioned: XChat group chats with public join links, and custom timelines on topics.
Bier has since left the role, so plans may have changed.
What we can and can't confirm
We can't confirm the feature's status, since X's pages aren't consistent.
- Still there: On November 3, 2026, x.com's Discover Communities page loaded on the account we tested, and it listed categories and at least one community.
- Still mentioned: X's Premium page still lists creating a Community as a feature, and its authenticity policy mentions them too. Help pages can lag, so that doesn't prove much.
- Unknown: Whether posting works normally, or whether this is a leftover page. We didn't test posting.
So check the status in your own account. Treat anything you find as temporary, unless X says otherwise.
Why you shouldn't rely on them
A lot of older growth advice says to post in Communities, on the basis that they get around your low follower count. That advice is risky now, even if some communities still work:
- X has said publicly that it wants to wind them down.
- By X's own account, they were heavy on spam, so the audience quality may be poor.
- Anything you build there could go away with little notice.
If you run a community, move your members now. Start a group chat, a newsletter or an off-platform space, so you don't lose contact with them.
What to do instead
These are our suggestions.
Build a private List. A List gives you a timeline of just the people in your niche. It's free and easy to set up, and nobody needs to accept anything.
Use search to find the conversation. Search finds posts about your topic from people you don't yet know. Try "your topic" min_replies:3 -filter:replies lang:en. Our search builder writes these for you.
Reply in active threads. Replies put you in front of people already reading about your topic. Here's how.
Use a shared hashtag where one's actually alive. Events and challenges can work as loose communities. X recommends no more than two hashtags per post.
Try a group chat for a small circle. Reports describe XChat groups with public join links and a limit of 350 members at launch, with plans to raise it. That's our secondhand reading, so check what's available to you. Don't use a group to trade engagement, though. X's policy prohibits coordinating to exchange likes and follows, and X's code comments say going to a post directly from a group chat has no ranking impact.
Keep a home you own. A newsletter or website means your audience doesn't depend on a single feature.
Where small accounts should spend time now
Without Communities, a small account's reach comes from a few places:
- Threads you join through useful replies.
- Fresh posts that may get the new-author lift in For You.
- Your followers, particularly people you talk with.
That's the routine in how to grow on X. It takes about 30 minutes a day.
Common questions
When did X Communities shut down?
X announced a closing date in May 2026, reported as May 6 and later May 30. But the Discover page still loaded for us on November 3, 2026, so we can't give you a firm end date.
Why is X shutting down Communities?
Bier cited low usage, of under 0.4% of users, and said they accounted for 80% of reports of spam, scams and malware.
What replaces X Communities?
Reports point to XChat group chats and custom topic timelines. For growth, we'd use Lists, search and replies.
Will my posts in a Community be deleted?
We couldn't find a clear statement from X. If they matter to you, save copies now.
Should I still post in X Communities?
It's fine to use one that's alive and useful to you, but don't make it your main plan. Keep your own Lists and contacts in case it goes away.
